Student Conference Newcastle -3-06 July 2013
Can I draw your attention to the National Architecture Student Conference taking place in Newcastle, Australia, Wed 03 - Sat 06 July.
This should be a great event and a chance to hear some excellent speakers. Richard Leplastrier and Peter Stutchbury met Philippa Tumubweinee on their 'oz.e.tecture' South African travels and were suitably impressed (Google her name for pics). 'Stutch', of course, will be there - dancing. Ian Athfield from New Zealand is a great friend and architectural 'wild man' who we partnered with for our several New Zealand Master Classes - seriously good architect, and the subject of a very comprehensive recent book by Julia Gately, University of Auckland. You could all learn a lot from study of 'Ath's' work and beautiful hand drawings. Then also wonderful Kerry and Lindsay Clare, who I had dinner with last Thursday night, as always doing some very interesting work. And all the others you will see on the program.
Also, perhaps, a chance to see buildings on the University of Newcastle campus, Glenn Murcutt's first building, the University Staff Club (1969), done when he was an assistant at Ancher Mortlock Murray and Wooley. Also Peter Stutchbury's Design Building (with EJE), the Medical Sciences Building with the big 'hangover' (with Suters). And the Aboriginal Cultural Centre 'Birabahn' Peter Stutchbury, Richard Leplastier and Sue Harper.
They have about 150 registrations already for the conference and can take more, students and recent graduates. I hope I will see you there.
I am introducing Ian Athfield. Photo below of 'Ath' with model and drawings of his award winning competition entry for low-cost housing for the Philippines 1975-76. Never built unfortunately - he'll tell you about meeting Imelda Marcus and her purple 'Lurex' trousers.
Deep and Wide,
Lindsay
